Edmonton's Mice Control Specialists

Mice and rats are among the most common pests that infest homes and buildings. They are notorious for causing damage to property and spreading diseases that can be harmful to humans and pets. If you notice signs of a rodent infestation in your home, such as droppings, gnaw marks, or even the rodents themselves, it's important to take action immediately.

Ignoring the problem or delaying mice control efforts can only make the situation worse. Rodents reproduce rapidly, and a small infestation can quickly turn into a full-blown infestation if left unchecked. These pests are also experts at hiding and can easily evade DIY pest control methods. That's why it's crucial to seek the help of professional pest management experts who have the knowledge, experience, and equipment to effectively eliminate rodents from your home.

At Professional Pest Management, we understand the urgency of mice infestations and the importance of a quick response. Our team of trained and experienced technicians will conduct a thorough inspection of your home to identify the source of the infestation and determine the best course of action. Winter Drives Mice Indoors

As the sun sets and the air turns chilly, mice seek shelter from the harsh winter. Though small in stature, these pests can wreak havoc in your home, causing significant damage. Not only that, they are carriers of perilous diseases and can contaminate your food. At Professional Pest Management, we boast years of expertise in tackling mouse infestations in Alberta. Join us as we explore the telltale signs of a mouse invasion and discover effective strategies to keep them at bay during the winter months.

Watch for These Signs

Not everyone realizes that detecting a mouse infestation may not be as obvious as they think. These cunning pests are skilled at sneaking around your house during the day and becoming more active at night when it's quiet. It's possible to have an infestation without even realizing it. The first step in addressing the problem is to accurately identify it. There are several common signs that indicate a mouse issue:

- Auditory clues: Scratching or scampering sounds coming from the walls, floors, or ceilings may indicate the presence of mice in your home.

- Evidence of droppings: Visible feces or a strong ammonia smell from urine.

- Shredded paper and insulation: Areas like offices, pantries, utility rooms, basements, and places with clutter are more susceptible to this type of activity.

- Physical damage: Mice often chew on hard surfaces such as baseboards and ceiling tiles to create openings.

- Damage to electrical wiring: The longer mice are present in your home, the greater the risk of electrical damage that could potentially lead to a devastating fire.

How Mice Get In

Ensuring thoroughness in minimizing or eliminating entry points within the household is of utmost importance. Mice possess exceptional climbing abilities, are nimble, and exhibit cunning when attempting to infiltrate homes. Their ability to leap 12 inches in the air, scale heights of up to two dozen feet, and squeeze through crevices as small as a dime makes them formidable opponents. Here are several areas to closely monitor and seal should any openings be detected:

- Pay close attention to corners and other crevices where the siding meets the foundation.

- Be vigilant in identifying and sealing crevices around windows, particularly basement windows.

- Address any holes or gaps in the foundation.

- Be mindful of garages that are attached to the house, as the door may not seal completely. (Any presence of light gaps indicates potential mouse entry points!)

- Take note of open chimneys and other areas where heat can escape. These areas pose a higher risk during colder weather, as desperate mice may seek shelter.

- Examine all utility lines, fans, and exhausts entering or exiting the home.

Taking the time to inspect and seal these areas, either independently or with the assistance of a professional, is crucial in significantly reducing the chances of mice gaining access to your home.

Health Concerns of Mice Infestations

It is widely acknowledged that having mice in one's home is undesirable. However, the understanding of the specific dangers they pose is often overlooked.

Aside from causing physical damage by chewing on parts of the house, certain species of mice (such as Deer mice) are known to transmit diseases (like Hantavirus) through their droppings. Mice are attracted to the warmth escaping from homes as well as food sources, making open or packaged dry goods like pasta, cookies, pet food, and flour highly desirable to them.

Once inside, mice will make every effort to access any available food source, potentially spreading germs and diseases as they move around. To safeguard your dry and packaged goods, it is advisable to store them in sealed containers, preferably made of thicker plastic or glass. Simply placing open or packaged goods up high in the pantry or another cupboard does not guarantee their safety from mice.

Some Prevention Tips

Prevention methods are crucial and can sometimes feel overwhelming to those unsure of where to start or how to proceed. This is especially true when it comes to dealing with a pest infestation. To avoid the hassle of a mouse invasion, it is best to prevent their entry into your home altogether.

Here are a few winter tips to keep mice at bay:

- Take the time to seal any cracks and crevices around your home, as mentioned earlier, in order to significantly decrease the likelihood or completely prevent their entry.

- Remove any piles of leaves, stacks of wood, or mulch near the perimeter of your home. The farther away from the foundation, the better.

- Ensure that all food is stored in containers with secure lids, as mentioned previously.

- Make an effort to keep the area around your home, both indoors and outdoors, free from clutter and food debris.

- Place outdoor bird feeders at a distance from your home. Ideally, they should be closer to the fence line or at least 30 feet away from your home. Mice are highly attracted to dropped feed or feeders placed too close to the house.

- If not being consumed at the moment, pet food can leave behind debris.  Clean up after each feeding so as not to attract mice.

If you suspect that your space has been invaded by mice, you can make use of baits and traps available at nearby stores to capture and manage them. However, keep in mind that mice are ultimately wild animals and may continue their activities for a while. If the situation becomes unmanageable, it is advisable to seek assistance from a professional. Mice can cause damage and pose a threat to health and hygiene, so it is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of yourself, your family, and your pets.

Do Not Delay Starting Mice Control

Don't hesitate to contact a professional immediately if you notice signs of mice or other rodents, such as droppings or chewed items. Mice reproduce rapidly, typically having litters of around 5-12 babies, with an average of 10, within a short period of time. Even a small number of mice or a small amount of droppings can quickly become a major problem if not addressed promptly.

Controlling mice is typically not a difficult task if you follow these simple tips and tricks. By understanding their weaknesses and movements, you can gain the advantage over them. At Professional Pest Management, we have highly skilled technicians with extensive experience in rodent control. We are always just a phone call away whenever you need assistance.
